Keeping your skin healthy for the whole year is not as easy as it seems. During warmer months, we need to protect it from heat damage, while during colder months, we need to protect it from the cold. Since this summer is slowly coming to an end and the weather is starting to change, so should your skincare routine because, unlike warm weather where your skin gets all greasy and dirty much easier (which is normal since pores get wider from heat), during colder months, it gets all itchy because the coldness tightens it. And right before you know it, boom – here comes the spring. So in order to help you take care of your skin through all seasons, I created this all-in-one list.
Winter
During winter, our skin gets all flaky and can often crack, which is extremely itchy or even painful.
The first thing you should have in mind is that your skin should always be moisturized. Applying a thick moisturizer as soon as you get out of the shower and then one more time during the day is going to make your skin much smoother and stronger.
Speaking of showers, avoid long hot showers and baths, because by doing so and forgetting to moisturize, your skin is going to suffer and you will end up with a bunch of cracks on its surface. The explanation is simple – water, especially hot water, will evaporate fast, and when your skin is not moisturized immediately, the cracks will let the skin nerves get exposed to air, and that results in the “winter itch”.
Logically, due to all this, you should switch to the gentlest possible cleansers, and have all the patience in the world while doing your cleansing routine.
Finally, exfoliate less since the skin gets dryer during winter, and don’t forget SPF! Just because the weather is colder, it doesn’t mean that the sun isn’t still above us.
Spring
Spring is the time when we are replacing all of our cozy sweaters with layered sheer tops, and that kind of a transition should happen with your skincare as well. When the weather switches from cold and dry to humid and moist, first, it is time to replace those heavy moisturizers with something light and water-based.
Secondly, spring is all about exfoliating and displaying your natural glow, so wash away the coldness and banish those clogged pores with the help of natural scrubs.
Also, there will be even more sunshine, so make sure you wear at least SPF 30 all the time.
Vitamin-infused water is always a good idea, especially during spring and summer when there are fresh cucumbers, lemon, and mint. Put all these ingredients into a glass water bottle, store it in the fridge and drink it whenever you have a chance. It will help you get rid of toxins and rehydrate your whole body.
Summer
During summer, the temperatures reach a peak, so we need to, firstly, exfoliate daily before the toner and moisturizer application. Exfoliation will remove all those dead skin cells and prevent congestion, which will improve the effect of moisturizers and toners.
Next, make sure both you and your skin are hydrated at all times – use a moisturizer daily and increase your water intake – drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
The third step is the step you mustn’t forget – SUNSCREEN. It is not enough just to apply it. You have to apply enough of it and you need to apply it frequently. A teaspoon for the face, a shot glass for the body. And have in mind that there are a lot of new, sophisticated formulas that let you select the one that suits your skin condition the most. This means you can choose matte, oil-free formulas for dry skin or chemical-free formulas for sensitive skin. If you are in a sensitive category, try this natural sunscreen from Wotnot.
However, if you forget to apply your SPF and get sunburned, apply cooling balms generously at the first sight of that unwanted pink glow.
Fall
The sharp drop of temperatures requires sharp skincare routine changes. To save your skin from becoming dull and dehydrated, exfoliate at least once a week to increase cellular regeneration and remove dead skin cells. Avoid cosmetics that contain drying alcohol because you need all the moisture you can get.
Since the weather will become windy, don’t forget about your hands as well, and pamper them with hand creams daily.
And that would be it. If you have some more tips you would like to share with my readers, feel free to comment below.
