Hey there! I’m Katie, of Katie Derus Photography. I’m a Wisconsin-born-and-raised gal who spent the last 7 years living out in Colorado enjoying all the mountains had to offer and starting my photography business. Now I’ve moved back to Wisconsin and I’m loving being back in the Midwest where I’m spending time with my family and friends and enjoying doing photography back in the place I’ve always called home!
I have a degree in Photojournalism – my first photography love – and after a few years working at a city newspaper, I decided to switch gears and start capturing people’s most important and special memories using the journalist style I love! I love to be a part of people’s engagements and weddings or their everyday lives as a family. I love to look from the outside in and make lasting memories for them to look back on and remember their wedding day that flew by, or their kiddos when they were just tiny babies or goofy toddlers!
This specific shoot I’m sharing here is extra special to me for several reasons! First, it is of my very dear friends who were also my roommates for a year! And second, because we were all so close they 100% trusted me when I got a crazy idea and suggested we do two different types of shoots, over two different days, and driving nearly all over the state of Colorado! In the end it was SO worth it because they have stunning images in beautiful scenery and I especially love that they agreed to get REALLY dressed up and climb up in the mountains with me because those are truly once in a lifetime images!
Ultimately, my goal in every shoot is for my clients to leave feeling like they had fun and the whole “photo shoot” thing wasn’t as painful as they thought it might be (you know, while they were getting their kiddos wrangled into their dresses or button down shirts amongst the whining protests hah!). The best compliment I can receive is a message from a mother after her family shoot saying, “I basically had to bribe my kids and even my husband into doing this, and I was so worried how this would go, but in the end you made everything so easy and fun and now my kids are asking when we can see Miss Katie again for more photos!” Or an engaged couple saying, “We thought this would be so awkward, but we had a blast and felt almost like we had a mini date-night with the added bonus of wonderful images capture of us together!”
Getting to know new people and being a part of clients’ lives over the years is the absolute best part of this photographer job, and I love what I do day-in and day-out!
