Laura Perkins from The Perkins Photographers // Wedding Photography

My passion in life is event photography. While attending Mount Saint Mary’s University in Los Angeles, I began photographing events on campus and soon became employed as a freelance photographer for the college. I brought my camera everywhere and soon became well-known for my work, even though I studied English and Literature, and believed writing was my only true creative outlet.

After graduating and working in the corporate world (A.K.A. a barista), I began photographing weddings, events, and engagements as a full-time entrepreneur. My weekends are spent in 12 to 14-hour days, highlighting all the details.

Recently I was able to photograph my friend Sarah’s wedding. She and I worked at Mount Saint Mary’s together. Not only were some of the women I also worked with attending the wedding, her Maid of Honor was my previous employer at the Mount! I am so grateful for couples like Sarah and her husband Gannon, who allow me to enter into their space and truly show off the details of their wedding day.I love photographing weddings because you learn so much about the couple and their families. I learn the way they drink their coffee, their favorite dance moves.  I pride myself on showing the real details of a wedding day.I don’t believe in stiff, posed photographs. I believe in natural light, wide angle lenses showing empty coffee cups strewn across the counter, inside jokes, and children playing. I believe in post-ceremony photos of the bride and groom, candidly soaking in what just happened. I believe in corny dance moves at the reception.

14 hour days excite me, especially when I get to feel like I am part of the wedding day, and get to photograph the in-between moments. Photography isn’t a job, it’s an experience. And I am glad to have that experience in my life.
