  • Kimberley Kufaas Photography | Vancouver Island

I'm Kimberley Kufaas, a wedding photographer, an artist, a story teller. I was born and raised on Vancouver Island, BC where the beauty around me when I step out the door is inspiring for my passion for photography.

I adore connection and romance, which has placed me here with a passion for capturing those moments. I'm forever searching for hidden gems and pretty light. I love when couples fully trust me when I tell them I've found the most epic location and no questions asked, they are along for the adventure.

Choosing one shoot to blog might just be the most difficult thing to do so I've chosen this west coast stylized shoot. This duo is amazing to photograph, not just because they're gorgeous but especially for their mad love for one another. They're good friends of mine and I had photographed their wedding in 2014.

This stylized shoot was shot at San Josef Bay west of Port Hardy, BC. This little gem is close to my hometown and a favourite beach to visit as a child.

The evening before the shoot my model and good friend Lucy and I sat down and made her flower crown. We made the crown out of cedar picked from her backyard. With Lucy and I being first nations from the Kwagu'ł territory we felt using cedar was special. Cedar has been used for healing, purification and for spiritual protection. Its spiritual properties are supposed to promote peaceful thoughts and help interpret messages from the inner self.

The drive out to this beach and hike is a days commitment. We drove through snow and on a logging road for about 2 hours and hiked 45 minutes on Boxing Day. It was below freezing, but if I didn't tell you I'm sure you wouldn't have guessed!

Life is so full of adventure being a portrait photographer in the gorgeous state of Montana. From a young age, I have had a love for photography and that passion has not dimmed in over 10 years! I am so blessed to have the privilege of capturing life's best moments as my career.

When asked about my favorite photography session, many faces run through my memories.  One bride and groom's wedding in particular stands out to me as the most memorable for so many reasons. The love and warmth that radiated from them and their families was intoxicatingly beautiful. They hosted an intimate backyard wedding set in the warm afternoon day during the summer of 2015. People were scurrying around the house in preparation and and even though things were behind schedule the mood was joyful. It wasn't an uncommon thing to hear burst of laughter coming from the kitchen or the upstairs room where the bride was getting ready. Everything in the wedding had meaning and a story to go with it.  A few examples are these: the gorgeous wedding dress was sewn by the bride herself, the grandmother's locket was tied on the bridal bouquet complete with a picture of the bride's grandfather who had passed away, the best man was the groom's own father, the backyard sat behind the bride's family house where she grew up, the cake and flowers were made by hand by a family member, and the list goes on and on. The ceremony was delightful to listen to and unique to them as a couple. There was a slight sprinkle on us during the wedding ceremony but only lasted a few short minutes. The light water drops were worth sitting through as the moisture in the air provided a gorgeous double rainbow over our heads during the wedding vows! It was a stunning sight to behold.  Even the vows were handwritten and tears of joy were shed by the couple while they said, "I do". The gift table was heaped full of unique and personal gifts brought by so many loved ones. A bonfire was started at dusk and many gathered around to meet new couple and chat with old friends.  By the end of the night, the cake was forgotten and left uncut as dancing and fellowship with the bride and groom made the night fly by into the wee hours of the morning. This lovely wedding afternoon was the perfect balance of beauty, in it's simplicity, with a hint of vintage in the traditions. It wasn't only one of the most beautiful wedding I've had the pleasure to capture, but what makes this day stand out in my mind was the love and joy lavished by everyone who hosted and attended. Almost a year later, this couple is still happily married here in Montana and expecting a little baby in a few short months! I am blessed to know them and to have had the pleasure of capturing their special wedding day.
