  • How I did my own Maternity Photos in Vancouver BC

My name is Amanda Dams and I live in Richmond, BC, Canada. In 2010 I completed a certificate program in Photography at the University of South Florida (Tampa, FL, USA). After a couple of years working as a wedding photographer, I specialized in newborn, baby and maternity photography. I’m the face behind Amanda Dams Photography and I photographed over 650 babies and 300 maternity sessions.

I would highly recommend hiring a professional photographer to capture the most special moments of your life, including pregnancy and all the milestones of your little one. When it was my turn to be in front of the camera, as a photographer, I challenged myself that I could do my own maternity photos, and I did.

I was lucky enough to be at the ideal time for maternity photos at the same time there was a sunflower festival closer to where I live. Acres of beautiful blooming sunflowers in many different varieties were definitely the perfect background for photos!

All I needed to photograph my own maternity session were a camera, a tripod and LOTS of patience. If you have ever been in a photoshoot, you know we photographers are able to do a variety of clicks and poses in a short period of time but when you are using a tripod and you set the timer of the camera, things are very different.

I adjusted all the camera settings and the focus on my husband, then I set the timer and I ran and pose in less than 10 seconds before the camera shoots. My husband couldn’t move, otherwise, the focus wouldn’t be correct and we would have to do this process all over again.

Keep in mind that I was pregnant and wearing a super long gown, so running in a wet and puddled field, wasn’t that fun.

Camera settings ok, focus ok, 10 seconds, run, pose… click! Done, we got ONE photo, yay! Now repeat.

After a couple of hours and a lot of running, I was satisfied and so happy with the results we got from this photoshoot. It was definitely a unique experience, different from everything else I did in the past 10 years as a photographer. Despite all the challenges, I had so much fun creating these images, and I feel so proud when I look back at them. The final results couldn’t be any better and that day will be always in my memories, the day I did my own maternity photos.

Often I'm asked what my favorite photography session is. I think hard and end up picking a different session each time. I never remember which session I had chose last. This isn’t because my sessions aren’t memorable or fun, it's quite the opposite actually. That's because it is impossible to pick just one!
