Switchback Photography Upstate South Carolina

Hey guys, I am Troy Compton, an accidental photographer. Along with my wife, we own  Switchback Photography located in the upstate of South Carolina. We are blessed to work in an amazing part of the country. We are minutes away from the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina and just a few quick hours from the beach. It makes for some of the most breathtaking backdrops to shoot  weddings or portrait photography.

I would be amiss if I didn't mention my wife Keri. First of all, she is my second shooter, and more importantly the backbone, and driving force of our business.  I would never be able to do this job without her. She keeps me organized, on track, and supports me in countless facets of this roller coaster business. She is my accountant, manager, therapist, partner, greatest supporter and fan. I couldn't do it without her. Keri facilitates many things and she goes far beyond the duties of photographing weddings.

Becoming a Photographer

I took a different path that led me to photography. So let me start by saying that it has been inspiring to experience over 300 weddings. I didn't start out as a photographer. I spent the first part of my life as a Chef. So years of serving couples on their special day in a culinary capacity was soon to change. I found myself being a stay at home dad, with a  lot of time on my hands, taking photos. I had always had a passion for photography. My family and I  were always taking photographs and documenting our adventures in the outdoors. This led to someone asking me to do some photos. I responded by saying, "I have never done portrait work." Well, as they say, the rest is history.

I honestly have a hard time choosing a favorite wedding or weddings for that matter. I see happiness in every one. I can't just "pic" one wedding.  Sorry for the cheesy pun; I couldn't help myself.

Weddings are my Favorite

All weddings are unique. While they all bring  a familiar excitement, I can remember every wedding and they all hold a special place in my heart. I try my best to take it far past being just a job. I think you have to become emotionally invested to truly give your absolute best. I evoke emotion into my work. I want clients to view my photos and be able to feel that emotion we are all experiencing. It's cliché, but that's exactly what we do: capture memories. But not just memories, emotion. I often notice myself smiling as I'm editing photos--drifting back to the precise moment-- it's like a "flash" of happiness. I did it again...

I always remind myself how lucky I am to be a part of the the clients' lives. As photographers, we get to share intimate moments that even  friends and family don't get to experience-- getting to be a part of a private first look or proposal is always amazing. Getting to welcome a new edition to the family as they use my photographs to show off to the world is always special. We are truly the lucky ones. The list keeps getting longer, not just clients, but new friends. We've had many clients come to know our children and treat them like their own. To us, the ultimate compliment is growing with a family--from senior portraits, to the engagements, on to wedding,  and their first child. As a client continues to make you a part of their lives, we know we are doing something right.
