There is nothing harder than getting people, adults and children, to smile and be natural for the camera. Yet it was in becoming a mother to 5 kiddos (then becoming a single mom) I found I had a talent for making kids show their true, natural beauty for the camera. I discovered my own way of helping them step out of this world and into a place where they feel safe to laugh, to play, and to smile.
I broke into photography by working with families, seniors, and children. It didn’t take long before I learned the challenges of helping families relax, dads to enjoy being photographed, moms to love how they look, and teens to not feel awkward. I also learned how some kiddos are nervous with all of the attention a photography session can bring. I found the best way to bring out the authentic twinkle in kids’ eyes is to make the session magical. Magic? Yep. You see, a rock found on the ground can suddenly be magical. Of course! I simply try to find something that catches kids’ imaginations and tell them a tale to escape the pressure of a session. We can discover new things - pretend we are on all kinds of adventures. Amazing images come naturally once we start having fun.
It became my dream to give other parents this gift, so I began creating photoshoots that would encourage imaginations to come alive. “Fairies are for Real” has become one of my favorites. Children are taken on a real-life adventure to find fairies in a very special enchanted forest. It is a hunt that brings many surprises, many smiles, and many keepsake quality photos.
