Hey there y'all! My name is Angela and I am the owner and the lady behind the lens over at Studio Masters. I am based out of Overland Park, Kansas (Metro Kansas City) but I often travel for weddings. You can read more about me and why I do what I do (hint, I take A LOT of pictures) over on my bio page, so I won't bore you with the details here. Basic Invite asked me to guest blog about my favorite session and I know exactly which one comes to mind. This past October, I shot a sweetheart engagement session at Lake Jacomo for my wedding clients, Renee and Jeff so keep scrolling so you can see for yourself exactly why it was so fabulous!

Let me introduce you to my adorable couple!

Renee and Jeff reached out to me several months ago about shooting their wedding in June at Wildcliff Weddings & Events in Blackwater, Missouri. They had viewed my portfolio online and they were drawn to my outdoor natural light images. Renee said "what struck me most was your (clients) in front of the camera look really comfortable and in their element ."

You know what? They're right. I really do try to get to know my clients, to connect with them. Once I've established this connection, I work on getting them to show me theirs. I begin most sessions by chatting with them and getting a "formal" shot (parents love these) and then I change the tone a bit and ask them to look at each other and think about the first moment they knew the other was the one. I tell them to close their eyes and really envision it and tell them to open them and look at each other. Works every time! I either get an image like the one on the left or like the one on right. If I'm lucky, I get both, like I did with Renee and Jeff.

Many clients feel odd about the PDA but I just tell my couples, that these tender moments you will later find in your gallery, that ones that you feel a bit silly for, will really carry you through difficult times when life is handing you some lemons.

Once we've begun to break the ice, I usually tell my couple to go into the heart to heart pose. I ask them to barely touch each other's foreheads (I mean barely!) and to close their eyes. I ask them to just think about how much they love each other and to relax into their loved one's embrace. Breathe each other in. This really sets the tone for the upcoming romantic shots.

Renee and Jeff love the outdoors, so of course we went camping! Complete with their equipment and their beloved fur baby, Chayse. We did have a heck of a time building the fire due to the wind, but my husband jumped in and got us a blazing fire. While Robby (my husband) was busy with the fire, I continued to chat with Renee and Jeff and I got some fabulous lifestyle images for them. This will definitely will go down as one my favorite sessions. Ever.

As if it couldn't get any better, when it was nearly dark, we concluded our session with a trip to the lake for the shot Jeff had been dreaming of... Taking the plunge. Yes, I really do have the best clients ever.

In closing, I really think successful engagement photography is all about creating a session where your clients feel safe to not only express their connection to each other but to express the emotions that come with marrying the love of their life. In most cases, my sweetheart sessions are just the appetizer to the wedding. By the time the wedding arrives, my couples are well educated on posing, verbal cues and they already know they can be vulnerable in front of me and my camera and they know they can trust me to document them in a meaningful way.

If you feel the same way or just want to be inspired every so often, feel free to follow along!
