Heather Siverd Photography | Maryland Photographer

Hello, I'm Heather! :) I never saw myself as being a professional photographer when I was younger. My fifth-grade dream was to be a vet, because I love animals. That lasted until I learned that I would have to cut them open to operate from time to time. Sorry, can’t do that! I’ve always loved taking photos outside and at gatherings with friends and family, but I only saw professional photos as being posed in studios, because that’s all I knew growing up. I had no interest in telling people to look at me and smile. Then I discovered the amazing world of lifestyle photography, outside in amazing light, and full of candid photos with genuine emotion. I fell in love after my first black and white film class. And I still love black and white photography so, so much. There are just some situations where black and white captures the moment, emotion, and detail so much better than color. One of my favorite quotes is, “When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!” - Ted Grant.

I pursued photography as a hobby for years, thinking I could never turn it into a career. My husband pushed me to consider starting my own business, which I did gradually alongside my full-time job. Then we wanted to give our fur baby a human sibling . . . and found out we were having twins! We discussed the idea of me leaving my full-time job to care for our children and continue to build my business into a full-time career. This idea became reality much sooner than we anticipated, with the birth of our twins about 3 ½ months early, at just 26 weeks. I was actually scheduled to begin bed rest the day they were born to try and prevent preterm labor. God certainly had other plans for our family, and our miracle babies have been such a blessing. My business has allowed me to provide them with the special care and attention they need. I have been able to grow my business and skill at a steady pace, and I have started to second shoot for weddings, with a goal of offering wedding photography once my little ones are in school.

It’s impossible for me to choose a favorite photo session. Each one is different and unique in its own way. I constantly come home from sessions and look through the photos thinking, wow, I love these photos so much! I think it’s my best session to date. Then I go to my next session and think the same thing all over again. Another favorite quote of mine is by Imogen Cunningham. She said, “Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow.” I look forward to every new session and experience, and I would love to travel and do some destination photography. My business is still young, and I look forward to the amazing opportunities and adventure it may bring. :)
