Mira Whiting Photography | Boston Portrait Photographer

I'm Mira, of Mira Whiting Photography.  I'm a portrait photographer based in Massachusetts in the Greater Boston area, and traveling throughout New England. I got into photography for a kind of silly reason when I was a kid:  my best friend's cool older cousin was really into it (so, at 12, of course we were too).  But once I got started, I found I couldn't really stop.  I loved taking pictures of people -- my own family, my friends -- making sure that I had images to look back on when I wanted to.  When my summer camp started a photography program the year I was in a program that helped run activities for the younger kids, I jumped at the chance to learn more.  I had a blast teaching the younger kids while learning about how to properly expose and compose an image (and develop the film in the dark room!).

Fast forward a few (ahem) years, and I was a mom of two little ones who had never really put the camera down.  As a mom, I saw just how quickly my kids changed, and I could feel the time slipping through my fingers no matter how hard I tried to hold onto a particular stage,  So I turned to my camera to hold onto those memories for me (as a sleep deprived mom, my own brain wasn't holding onto nearly as many as I'd have liked!).  With my camera always around, I had more and more friends ask me to take their family's pictures as well, and the idea was born that I could do what I love so much, help other families in my community, and help my own family as well.

I recently worked with a mom and toddler.  It's just the two of them, and for mother's day, W. decided to get something really special for herself -- a professional portrait session.  She told me she mostly had cell phone shots of her daughter, and the only pictures she had of the who of them together were selfies "If I got hit by a bus tomorrow, it's not clear she'd have much evidence I was here at all."

So we met up at a local farm in Winchester, MA just before sunset and had a blast exploring the farm, meeting a chicken, and generally just showcasing the love between the two of them -- telling the story of who THEY are.  The same sorts of stories I've always loved telling -- from when I was a kid with my black & white film camera, to college where I majored in history because I loved exploring families' stories, right up to the present where I work with families throughout Greater Boston to preserve and tell their stories.

Here are a few of my favorites from my time with W. and her daughter, A.:
