Hello! My name is Melanie, and I am the owner of Melanie Matchette Photography, which is located in Lansing and Kalamazoo, Michigan. I've been doing photography for around about six years now. I am currently a student at Western Michigan University, and after graduation, I plan to relocate to the Metro Detroit area.
I started getting interested in photography in high school and started doing shoots with some of my good friends. I would go to the park with one of my good friends at the time and do some just-for-fun photo shoots with her on the weekends.
During college, I took advantage of any downtime I had by trying new techniques, shooting in new locations, and learning more about photo editing.
I mainly focus on portrait and event photography since I love being able to help people capture important moments in their lives. Senior photos, like the ones I've included in this blog post are always so fun.
Sometimes I'll shoot in a studio, but I love to use natural lighting. It's so rewarding to see the weather provide great lighting in a beautiful setting.
I work with a Canon Rebel EOS XSi, which isn't a top-of-the-line model, but I've found that the equipment is, at most, half of what it takes to put together a beautiful photo. I'm hoping I'll be able to purchase some new equipment soon, though. I look forward to seeing what I can do once I have the chance to experiment with different technology.
A lot of the portrait work I've done so far has been for friends of mine, including those I've met through my years of dance training. These are the senior photos for a friend of mine who I danced with for a long time.
I was able to get some great dance shots in this session. In the photo above, I really wanted to capture her years of hard work en pointe, so we hung them all up in a tree. I wasn't sure how this shot was going to turn out, but it's one of my favorites thus far.
I'm looking forward to exploring potential new shoot locations in the Metro Detroit area once I relocate. I've discovered a lot of great places in Lansing, but it's time to move on and explore outside of that area. I also hope to meet other photographers so we can learn from each other and improve our photography.
I'm always looking to improve and learn more about photography, and the best way for me to do that is to just keep shooting. Photography has been instrumental in my life for helping me express myself, and it's so exciting to me that I'm able to do what I love.
