I'm so excited  to be featured as a guest blogger and share with you everything about Jennifer Rittenberry Photography!  I am a Kentucky Newborn and Maternity Photographer that has been shooting in Central Kentucky for over 10 years. I'm located right outside of Louisville KY in Mount Washington.  It's a quiet little town that has exploded in growth over the last 5 years.  That's exciting news for a newborn and maternity photographer like me, because that means there are more babies around for me to get my hands on!

This has been a really great year for me.  From all of my wonderful clients to the prestigious awards that I've received, there is really nothing more humbling.  If I had one key piece of advice to share, it would be this: I have really tried to stay true to myself and the things that I love to photograph instead of trying to chase every trend that pops up.  I pick and choose the things that I absolutely love and stick with them until I'm ready to add some new things in to freshen it up, but all while keeping within my style.  It's easy to get lost in the sea of photographers out there in this industry, but if you stay focused on your work and let your inner passions shine through in every session, then that is what will set your work apart when attracting new clients.  There is always going to be someone smarter, someone more creative or someone just plain better for whatever reason, but the same thing rings true for each and every person on this earth.... There is only one YOU.  Embrace it.

I started out like most photographers.  I grew up loving to take pictures and always had a camera strapped to me at family gatherings, which meant that I was the quickly assigned as the designated photographer for every holiday.  As a teenager, my BFF's would come over for slumber parties and I'd give them all makeovers and style their hair, makeup and wardrobe just so I could make them model for me and indulge in my then budding love for photography.  Over the years, I wanted to transform into something more than just a hobbyist, so I started researching and taking classes on anything related to digital photography.  I upgraded my camera from the typical point and shoot to my first manual camera; a Canon Rebel xsi.

I remember the day that I bought that camera at my local Best Buy like it was yesterday.  It was one of those defining moments that change your life somehow.  There was a huge storm rolling in and the skies were angry with black clouds and thunder booming in the distance.  I didn't care.  I was buying my camera and nothing was going to get in my way.  The store wasn't very busy when I arrived and quickly went over to the camera counter, selected every item on my shopping list of camera and accessories  and was ready to check out.  Wouldn't ya know, the dang lights went out and registers went offline.  Just my luck!  We waited around until the power came back on so I could finally check out and get my new baby home.  lol.  I was ready to play and explore every new feature and option this exciting new toy had to offer.  Much to my excitement, there was also a slap of reality that set in.  I had no idea what the heck to do with this thing when I set it on Manual!

I was determined to get over this learning curve, and be quick about it, too!  I signed up for a workshop to learn how to use the camera, what each setting meant and really how to compose a great photo.  Every class created a new adventure afterward; I would run out and grab the first friend or family member that I could find and started shooting with my newly learned skills.  I grew both in shooting skill and posing, which allowed me to start a photography business after fully comprehending how to use my camera properly and being able to compose a shot worth hanging on your wall.  I would photograph anything that came my way from couples, to weddings to birthday parties and even bachelorette parties.  You name it, I would book it.

Fast forward to 2013 and I was introduced into the world of newborn photography.  This was something completely foreign to me and thought I'd give it a whirl after seeing such gorgeous images popping up in my Facebook newsfeed.  As I quickly learned after my first failed attempt, there was a lot more to this industry of photography and had a long way to go before I would master it.  I was up for the challenge though and Rachel Vanoven made it a possibility with her online newborn workshop.  I bought it and immediately started watching every video and studying her every move in them.

Custom Birth Announcements and Greeting Cards are another great way to showcase these adorable babies, too.  All proud parents want to show off their new baby and what better way to do it with a fully customizable birth announcement that is sleek and modern to today's trends? Their site is full of some really great tools and some online printable freebies as well.

I wish I had some images to share with you on how far that I've come last 3 years, but as with technology, nothing is safe from crashing and lost several years worth of old files earlier this year.  I went on to mentor with Rachel in person in 2014 and last year I added a mentor training with Dewdrops Photography to sharpen up my newborn posing skills.

Some of my all-time favorite photos are those of new parents!  Working with First-Time Parents brings an inner joy that is so exhilirating that it's almost hard to put into words.  It's all about the way moms still have that glow about them, even though they've already started their journey of sleep deprived nights.  Or with dads and the newfound joy that he's found in the love for his wife and how they formed this beautiful new baby together.  This miracle. That they created has now deepened their love for one another and runneth over for this child.  I capture all of this!
