Cherry Blossom Engagement Photo Session in Washington, D.C.

When the cherry blossoms are in bloom around the tidal basin in Washington, D.C., it is truly magical. Especially when you can get there at sunrise and no one is around to disturb their quiet beauty. It is a huge tourist attraction and you will see many photographers out there with their clients, struggling to get the perfect photos without the crowds in the background.

When Mara, Dave and I met for their engagement photo session on a weekday morning in March, we lucked out because there were not a lot of people around and the sky was cloudy which produced a beautiful, soft light. Mara brought the perfect prop to go with her outfit – a delicate, white umbrella from Anthropologie – and the two were in great spirits for getting up at 4am to get ready for this shoot! We casually strolled around the trees, looking for the best ones as a backdrop. I didn’t have to give much direction to Mara and Dave. You could tell they were very much in love and happy to be doing this together.

This has always been a favorite photo shoot of mine because I had a couple that was easy to work with, a gorgeous setting, the perfect weather and, at the time, I had recently quit my full-time job to focus solely on my wedding photography business. There are a lot of photographers in the Washington, D.C. area and for a couple to choose me over the competition is a big deal and I appreciate each and every one of them!

Even though Mara and Dave were holding their wedding out of state and had chosen another photographer to cover the event, I was flattered that they chose me to take their engagement photos here. We were able to create some really beautiful images that really reflected their love and personalities – which is all I could ever ask for during my photo sessions!
