I’d been obsessed with weddings since as long as I can remember, playing dress up in my mother’s wedding gown with a toilet paper veil as a little girl, devouring hours of Say Yes to the Dress as a teenager, and then meticulously planning my own dream wedding on Pinterest in my twenties. Throughout these years, I was also developing a passion for photography, snapping “modelling” photos with my sisters on a disposable camera, or filling up my digital point and shoot with hundreds of photos of friends, family and pets.

It wasn’t until University that I picked up my first digital DSLR – a Canon Rebel I nearly went broke purchasing for a photography course in my Fashion Communication Program at Ryerson University. That camera became my prized possession, and I began experimenting with different techniques while my gorgeous cousin graciously modelled for shoot after shoot.

Photography remained a passionate hobby for several years, but after working several jobs that left me unfulfilled, I found myself spending hours scrolling through the work of local wedding photographers and thinking “I could do this.” I started developing my website and branding right away, and as luck would have it, a few short weeks later, my sister introduced me to a friend of hers who was on an extremely tight budget and looking for a photographer for her wedding. For just $200, I photographed every moment of their day, doing my best to hide my inexperience and putting on my “confident wedding photographer” face. By some miracle, everything went smoothly, and I came out the other side with photos of their day that I could be proud of.

From there, I slowly built up a portfolio, gaining confidence and clients as the months went on. Four years later, my business is more successful than I could have ever imagined, and I feel so lucky to have such amazing clients that trust me with one of the most important days of their life. One of those amazing clients was Randy and Karen – when they told me about their vision for a Harry Potter themed wedding at our first meeting, I knew I’d be in for some amazing photos!

Their vision came to life even more beautifully than I could have imagined – “floating” candles glittered above their head table, which featured the banners of each house and colour coordinated flowers to match. Guests were sorted into their appropriate houses upon entering, and were seated along four expansive tables, each decorated for their house, and tiny snitches sat upon gold chargers. After grabbing a butterbeer from the bar, guests could pose for a selfie in Harry Potter garb, and drop off a card to the couple at the owl post.

For a theme that could have easily swayed into the tacky realm, Karen and Randy did a beautiful job of marrying their love of Harry Potter with an elegant, personal wedding that truly captured their personalities. It was an honour to be a part of it, and is a day I will not soon forget!
