Nelson Cinematic | Creating Moments that Last | Wedding Photography

A little back story on me, your not so new photographer, but new to this thing called, being your own boss. Over this past year I moved into a full time position at a job that I didn't find fulfilling anymore that ultimately lead me to put in my two weeks notice, six months after accepting the position. From there, I jumped full time into the entrepreneurial world working for a brand new start up. After four months of butting heads, arguments, a trip to France, a decline in clients, a whirlwind of emotions and a regrettable text, I derailed off that life track. Two months of "finding myself" which consisted of being a dog walker, and someone who bakes a lot, lead me to pick up my passion with photography again. Pulling myself up by my big girl panties, I decided to take another headfirst dive into the entrepreneurial world, but this time for mine, and my own, personal growth.

It has now been nearly six months that I have successfully been a wedding photographer and one of my favorite weddings to date would have to be the wedding of Lindsay and Kyle. They hold a special place in my heart because they were the first couple to hire me through my company. They were getting married in Flagstaff, which is where I went to college, and where two of my best friends, as well as my sister, got married. The day of their wedding, dark storm clouds loomed ahead as we made the trek up from Phoenix. Not to worry, it lended a dramatic glow to the scenery and is another reason why this particular wedding shoot remains my most memorable.

The sun peaked through just enough to provide me with the most delicate and beautiful light for some creative detail shots. Having the time to play with the brides jewelry is always fun and Lindsay had the brilliant idea to have some custom "Mrs. Dukes" wedding converse ready to dance the night away in, that I absolutely loved to photograph. When it came time for the ceremony, the rain lightened enough so the guests could put away their umbrellas and witness their loved ones make vows and seal it with a kiss. The sky may have been dry, but the eyes of Lindsay and Kyle were not and I could not help but be moved by the love they have for one another.

When the ceremony was finished, we were supposed to go photograph their sunset photos, but seeing as the rain had started back up and the sky had darkened, sunset photos seemed unlikely. I remembered a field that was near by and asked them if they would like to go out there for some misty, stormy photos instead, and they were immediately on board. This is where I actually had the most fun. As a photographer, you know that you are going to face some tough elements and you hope and pray that your equipment is built to handle what ever mother nature throws at you. In this case, we got to the field as it was lightly sprinkling and they chucked their umbrellas aside after a couple of shots. Having not quite figured out the whole taking photos while holding an umbrella, I was a tad forced to just deal with getting rained on. Their light hearted attitudes about the whole thing, lightened mine and we just embraced it as the light sprinkle turned into legit rainfall.
